Rachael in Life & Style Weekly
Me in my SCBD apron

Last week, I was walking through the Union Square Greenmarket and I swear… I saw Rachael Ray. Of course, I was too hesitant to say “Hi” because she was incognito with shades on and speaking to a friend. But, the timing couldn’t have been more perfect! I’ve been thinking about what my 2 year reflection post of SCBD should be about, since the anniversary of my start up of SCBD is October 19th.  After seeing Rachael Ray I realized I never got to say thank you, so here is my public thank you to Rachael Ray.

Dear Rachael Ray,

I’m Sara and I interned for your daytime show in the Fall of 2011, during my senior year of college at Fairleigh Dickinson University. I met you in the elevator a few times after taping and you were always sweet to me– you even introduced yourself to me after I said “Hi” when I first started interning. It was a moment I will never forget and I wanted to thank you for being so genuine and kind, it made a huge impression on me.

I also wanted to let you know that I am thankful for your having that daytime show, The Rachael Ray Show. It was a great opportunity for me to be an intern for it and I learned so much from your awesome, dedicated staff. I truly enjoyed every morning I had to get up and commute to intern there, even on early tape days. Seeing even the little things that I helped with as an intern, whether it be going for a prop run or being in the field with the field department  was always priceless. I am also thankful for your show because by interning, I found out I was a foodie. I knew it was love at first bite when we were able to try one of the leftovers from a segment. My favorite to this day was the Italian Shepherd’s Pie from the people’s choice segment; I enjoyed it so much I ate three pieces and didn’t feel the least bit guilty. I still can’t find the recipe on the site, think you can help me with that?

Last, I am most thankful for your show because without it, this site I started, smallchickbigdeals.com wouldn’t exist. Growing up I loved your shows– The Rachael Ray Show, 30 Minute Meals and $40 a day.  I still avidly watch your shows today, like Rach vs. Guy, etc. While working as an intern I kind of gave myself a $40 a day style challenge, well more like $10 a day lunch challenge and most days I succeeded. My goal was to find a meal that could last two days that was $10 or less. I also would  tell my fellow interns about the deals I found on my lunch breaks in Midtown East, which they got used to. I’ll never forget my stops at 696 Deli, Blarney Pub, and more. Also, the stops at Potbelly with the field department after shoots.

Thanks to you Rachael, I have fallen more in love with New York City and have been able to know all of its neighborhoods, villages, boroughs, and more. If it wasn’t for those runs that got me comfortable with navigating through the subway system, I definitely wouldn’t be as comfortable as I am today.

Thanks to you Rachael, I’ve had the opportunity to interview and meet famous, known chefs and dine at their restaurants. I’ll never forget saying “Hi” to Guy Fieri one day when I interned on the show but that’s just the beginning. Since my site started, I’ve been fortunate to work with brands and people I could only dream of including Daniel Boulud, Jose Andres and more.

Thanks to you Rachael, I’ve started something that is bigger than myself. At age 23, I have Small Chick Big Dealsmy company and website with an audience, a staff of writers and interns. If it wasn’t for me having the idea spring into my head that Thursday after finishing my work in the field department, it would not exist.

Thank you Rachael Ray and thanks to your staff at The Rachael Ray Show for giving me the opportunity to be an intern at the show and constantly inspiring me with my website, Small Chick Big Deals.

Hope I can meet you again and interview you for the site one day. If not, maybe I’ll run into you again at the greenmarket.

Thanks again.

Cheers,

Sara Monica aka The Small Chick

Lately I’ve been falling in love with different clothing stores and boutiques because as you know,  I am all about finding a good deal but having a unique piece to add to my wardrobe. When you go to as many events as I do you know you need an outfit that can travel– comfortable to wear at home, work appropriate and ready for the red carpet. Here are some of my favorite boutiques and stores that will have you ready head to toe.

Just Beautiful Boutique

SCBD_0511_154_BDC2013

Just Beautiful Boutique is an online boutique based out of Northern New Jersey. They sent me my dress for the #SCBDLaunchParty this past May. I also love the bikini they sent me because I was able to wear it on my cruise (stay tuned for that post). They have everything  from lingerie to blazers, including accessories to compliment your outfit. Go to their website, here.

Hazel Boutique

hazel

Hazel Boutique just opened this summer and is based in the Jersey Shore. You can find one of a kind clothes and accessories at Hazel because they find a bulk of their items on the west coast. Whether your looking for something chic to go out in or comfy to wear for night in Hazel Boutique has you covered. Please note they are appointment only at the moment. Check out their Facebook page, here.

The Nomad Truck

the nomad truck

Looking for some boho chic digs? Well The Nomad Truck, a mobile boutique has you covered for any season from clothes to accessories. I bought my shirt along with the shorts (shown above) when the summer started and they lasted the whole summer and will last me well into next summer. The outfit was perfect to wear on a casual day with my boyfriend, to networking events, and more. Jessie, owner of Nomad is a sweetheart too which made my shopping experience memorable. Check out their website, here.

Chic Rattle & Roll

shot11

Chic Rattle & Roll is also a mobile boutique, for all the glam girls out there. The shirt (shown above) was another one of my favorites to rock this summer. They have you covered from head to toe whether you’re looking for something to wear on the red carpet or out on the town in the city. Check out their website, here.

Aaraa Hoboken

aaraa

Aaraa Hoboken is the place to get one of a kind jewelry and accessories. Whether you are looking to go casual, glam or chic they have you covered. I’ve worn my jewelry from Aaraa to a number of different occasions and have received compliments every time. They have store in Hoboken and you can check out their site, here.

Chi-Flo.com

chiflo

Chi-Flo.com is one of my favorites, I guess you can say I’ve been part of the Chi-Flo army since the beginning and love every line she puts out. These clothes aren’t glam or chic per se but every shirt speaks in so many ways. I love that the clothing line as a whole celebrates counterculture hence the fall line’s name, Hell Cats & Underdogs which premieres this week. Join the movement and check out their site, here.

Pyknic.com

pyknic

I’ve been hooked on Pyknic.com since I started following them on Twitter. To put it simply they put food and fashion together and do it well. They celebrate and started the ‘young and hungry’  movement which I love since I’m part of it. All of their shirts have great foodie sayings but have that Philly (where they are based) edge to it. They also always have different deals and sales going on. Take a look at their site, here.

Grast NY

grast

Grast NY is a unique t-shirt shop based in the Port Authority subway station in NYC. They sell t-shirts and sweatshirts that are not only unique but have that New York flavor to them. I bought the sweatshirt (shown above) and t-shirt with the Brooklyn Bridge skyline a while back. Both purchases were great to wear for a casual night out and incredibly comfy. Check out their site, here.

Jane Basch Jewelry

jane basch

Complete your fall wardrobe with some of Jane Basch’s Monogrammed Jewelry. Her collections include everything from pearls (my pearl monogram bracelet shown above) to beautiful silver and gold. Jane makes it personal  by working on every piece herself which makes all of her jewelry that much more unique and worth the value. Even celebrities like Justin Bieber, Nelly Furtado and Drew Barrymore have worn her pieces. Treat yourself to a monogrammed necklace, here.

Have you been to any of these boutiques or stores? I’d love to know what you thought of them!

Here’s to looking stylin’ this fall season!

#SCBDFavorite: Get an ‘exquisite’ color & cut at Xquisite in Hoboken!

scbdfavorite

I love living in Bergen County and will be sad when I move back to the Jersey Shore in a few short weeks. Not only am I extremely close to NYC but I’m a quick drive or train ride away from Hoboken. Because of that, I am fortunate to have a salon there that I am loyal to and only get my haircut there while I’ve lived it up here. It’s Xquisite Color & Cuts located right near the train station on 1st Street.

Chelly & I

Chelly & I

The first time I went was actually right before Sandy hit but because it hit I couldn’t exactly write about it right away. Last month I went to the ‘BYOM’ aka Bring Your Own Makeup event they had where I was taught how to do my makeup by one of their makeup artists. I really learned a lot (see picture below) and my makeup looked great! I love that everytime I go there, I have the same hair stylist, Chelly. She does a great job cutting and styling my hair and is also fun to talk to. She also cuts it exactly how I want it, not too long, not too short!

#Sandy hits home in many ways for #SCBD

Sandy has hit home for me in many ways. My hometown, Howell is about 15 minutes from the Jersey Shore’s well known beaches such as— Belmar, Manasquan, Lavalette, Seaside Heights. These beaches gave me childhood memories with my family, moments of peace throughout my young adulthood and were a haven for me constantly. I can’t even tell you how many times I used to go to the Manasquan inlet just to think and take a deep breath of the ocean and relax. It was my getaway that wasn’t too far from home and now it’s gone. I also met my boyfriend and shared numerous memories at the Point Pleasant boardwalk which is now destroyed. It breaks my heart in so many ways.

My best friends & I on Manasquan Beach before Hurricane Irene last year. :(

The Mansaquan Inlet post-Sandy

Point Pleasant boardwalk post-Sandy

Sandy brought me home. First off, I haven’t been home since I’ve moved out officially into my apartment which is actually 4 months ago this weekend. Due to the loss of power in my new apartment in Bergen County after four days of surviving on gas & hot water (which we were fortunate to have) with my boyfriend Jason, his dog Aby, and my roommates we decided to come home. I’m now safe in my hometown Howell which has power, visiting my grandma’s who weren’t doing too well, and trudging through trying not to cry. My boyfriend is now home still waiting for power in his town in Somerset county now. As far as I know one of my roommates is safe somewhere with power while the other also waits in Northern Monmouth county.

Sandy hit my other ‘homes’– NYC & Hoboken. As you may know I am constantly commuting into the city and/or Hoboken constantly. I was actually supposed to go do an interview with the owner of Sweet Revenge in NYC the Sunday Sandy hit but due to high winds I had to re-schedule. I’ve seen so many posts of New Yorker’s pulling through and it makes me which I could I #DineOutinNYC in a flash but I am so far away and have no way in. I actually just got a haircut for a deal I will be telling you about when appropriate in Hoboken last Friday. The salon is now damaged and will need to be rebuilt. Hoboken has it the worst in North Jersey. It saddens me so much, I’m lost for words.

Hurricane Sandy’s toll on Hoboken

PATH station destroyed

The waiting game. As I wait for power to come back to my apartment and fortunate to have power where I am at home. All I want to do is help but I don’t know where to start, there are so many options which I will mention in my next posts or two. It’s uplifting to see so many people coming together in the area in a time of need.

Gas lines. The gas lines are crazy up in Northern Jersey especially near my apartment,  the gas lines are ridiculous and were long before the rationing even begun. It’s also bad near my school in Morris county. Rationing has effected all the counties I have and/or currently reside in. I never imagined this happening but I know it’s effective.

This post is very personal for me, this is just a local’s point of view on Sandy’s destruction to the places that mean a lot to me. Take this post however you’d like but it comes from a deep place.

The bright side. The bright side is that there are ways to help whether it be a donation, volunteering, eating local, giving family/friends a place to stay warm and charge up or even a warm meal. It’s so great to see residents of New Jersey & New York come together.

Before I start posting multiple ways to donate the easiest and most effective way is through the Red Cross, you can see this link on the side of my page & throughout my next few posts. If you can afford to donate, please do, anything helps:

On that note, please look out for my posts regarding Sandy within the week, ways to donate in New York & New Jersey which are hurting bad. I will resume my normal reviews, recipes, interviews, etc in a few weeks when I feel appropriate but until then look out for post- Sandy dining destinations both locally & nationally, organizations to donate to, post-Sandy recipes for those of us who may no longer have anything in the fridge (like me), comfort food recipes, and more.

Be well, stay blessed & strong…after every dark night there is a brighter day.
