#SCBDReview: .@LangostaLounge–Back from Superstorm Sandy

langosta 12

It was a dark and stormy night. Truly it was. This winter just wouldn’t let up on us down the Jersey Shore. And so it was on a dark, rainy night with impending snow that Sara and I went to visit the Langosta Lounge. Arriving at the entrance right on the Boardwalk in Asbury Park is pretty cool even in the nastiest of weather. A weeknight in bad weather in the winter, we were lucky enough to snag a table with a view of the Boardwalk and ocean. But the place filled up shortly after we were seated.

What a unique place. Vacation inspired cuisine. I know that means the chef-owners vacations, but just going there is like a vacation away from your everyday. If you haven’t been yet, I don’t know what you’re waiting for. Ahh,maybe you wanted to read my review first?

We started with one of their house inspired cocktails each. I had The Fashionista- Absolut Ruby Red Vodka, ruby red grapefruit juice, triple sec, fresh lime & cranberry because I love grapefruit juice and Absolut so I was starting as a happy camper. Sara had The Market Mojito- Fresh mint and strawberries; she tries to make her drinks healthy too. A little fruit, fresh, and that muddled mint. Can you smell it yet? They also have a unique wine offering. It is wine on tap. I know you are thinking, must be crappy stuff. But quite to the contrary, it is wine from France. In May, there should be a sampling evening.

They brought out their breadsticks and sundried tomato butter. So much better than plain butter, ya know? Then we tried a few appetizers. We had Thai street food, not what you think, unless you’ve been to Thailand. These were steamed Chinese buns with braised short rib and kimchi. So delicious.

It was then that Marilyn Schlossbach, the Executive chef here, popped out to say hello. This is no ordinary woman, I know I could write quite a few pages about her alone. Suffice it to say, she runs numerous restaurants, does work in many communities, and is raising twin toddlers. So, I asked her where her Superwoman cape was? She is a passionate woman and it is obvious in her restaurant.
Back to the food. We had lobster esquite on a stick. We had Cuban corn and curry lobster. We had Tuscan sausage with greens, cheese and white beans and then topped it off with Lobster Carbonara Pizza. Oh, yeah, we just had appetizers! Yikes, was there room for dessert? After we were told about the Passionfruit Pannacotta cheesecake and Jennies moms cookie sundae, we said YES. Coffee? Sure. So pleased when it came in a full sized mug. Perfect to wrap our hands around on this damp night. And the desserts were as delicious as they were beautiful.
So, if you haven’t been, you MUST go. And if you have been, when are you going back?

SCBD’s POV: Before Arlene and I dined at Langosta Lounge this last time, we actually went 4 years ago for my 21st birthday, it was also before Superstorm Sandy hit the Jersey Shore. I didn’t understand food like I do now so I didn’t exactly appreciate it but I knew the food was great. I’m so happy we came back when we did. Langosta Lounge is owned by Chef/Restaurateur Marilyn Schlossbach, She owns a few restaurants in the area including Pop’s Garage, a traditional Mexican concept next door. Langosta Lounge’s theme is based around food that Marilyn has ate on vacation and the dishes range from Thai Street Food to Lobster Carbonara Pizza. It’s definitely creative comfort food. As Arlene mentioned the Mixology program is phenomenal. Her Fashionista cocktail was a great mix of vodka and juices. My mojito was great too, you could taste how fresh the ingredients are. The desserts were just as delicious and perfectly prepared as dinner was. The cookie sundae was great but I really loved the Passion Fruit Pannacotta cheesecake, it knocked me off my feet.

They also have a lot of events going on that support different charities and the community, check them out, here.

Planning to go to the shore this Spring or Summer? Make sure you make Langosta Lounge one of your dining destinations.

#SCBDRecipe: Maker’s Mark Set the Bar for Superbowl Sunday

scbdrecipeYour party is not complete without these Maker’s Mark recipes.

Chef Lee Anne Wong, winner of Iron Chef America, editor of the Maker’s Mark® Cookbook and host of her new Cooking Channel series ‘Food Crawl’, has created several delicious game-day snack recipes using Maker’s Mark® Bourbon – handcrafted from the heart of Kentucky and the only bourbon versatile enough to shine from behind the bar and in the kitchen.

mm wings

Bourbon Apple Glazed Chicken Wings

Serves 4

2 lbs chicken wings, trimmed

1 cup Maker’s Mark® Bourbon

1 can frozen apple juice concentrate, thawed (12 ounces)

½ cup soy sauce

¼ cup cider vinegar

¼ cup dark brown sugar

4 large cloves garlic, minced

1 teaspoon salt

¼ teaspoon crushed red pepper

1 tablespoon maple syrup

  1. Combine all of the ingredients in a medium pot. Bring to boil on high heat and then reduce to a simmer for 30-40 minutes until the wings are tender and the glaze has reduced, coating the wings.

  1. Preheat the oven to 325°F. Remove the wings from the pot and transfer to a parchment lined sheet tray. Bake for 15-20 minutes until the wings begin to color and the glaze becomes shiny. Garnish with minced scallions and apple. Serve immediately.

Bourbon Onion Dip

Serves 6-10

4 tablespoon extra virgin olive oil

2 large sweet onions/vidalias, peeled, halved, sliced thinly with the grain

1 teaspoon salt

½ cup Maker’s Mark® or Maker’s 46™ Bourbon, plus 1 tablespoon

¾ cup Greek yogurt

½ cup fresh ricotta cheese

½ cup sour cream

Few drops lemon juice

Pinch sugar

Salt and pepper to taste

Crudite vegetables and chips for dipping

  1. In a wide heavy-bottomed pot, heat the olive oil over high heat. Add the sliced onions and the teaspoon of salt. Sauté the onions, stirring often until they begin to soften, 5 to 6 minutes. Reduce the heat to medium and continue to stir and cook the onions until they begin to color, about another 15 minutes. Add 1/2 cup of bourbon to the pan and stir in. Reduce the heat to low and cook the onions for another 30 to 40 minutes, stirring occasionally, until the onions have colored and caramelized. Remove the onions from the pan and spread on a plate or baking sheet to cool in the fridge.

  1. Using a food processor or blender, combine the ricotta and yogurt and process until smooth. Transfer the mixture to a bowl. Fold in the sour cream. Once the onions have cooled, rough

#SCBDRecipe: A New Year, A New Drink- Cosmopolitan Fizz-Punch

New Year’s day we always have a family party for New Years and my sisters birthday. This year my brother bought a moose punch bowl and matching cups from Christmas Vacation movie. So we decided to make a punch! My good friend recommended about four different types of punches to try. A Punch Cosmopolitan sounded delicious! So I searched online and came across this awesome recipe from the Food Network! We took this and changed it a bit by adding more liquid and liquor to it.

#SCBDRecipe: Tequila Mockingbird and Other Literary Cocktails

#SCBDRecipe – Tequila Mockingbird and Other Literary Cocktails

tequila mockingbird6tequila mockingbird

“Look, Kelly,” the Producer said to me, “it’s your two favorite things: literature and books!” Bingo, I just got the perfect simple Christmas present that will be used time and time again. He gifted me Tequila Mockingbird by Tim Federle, a hardcover cocktail recipe book with a literary twist! All of the cocktails in the book, along with a few mocktails and bar bite recipes, are puns of various works of classic literature. There are two main sections of the book: Drinks for Dames and Gulps for Guys.

Here are my favorite Drinks for Dames

1 ½ ounces vodka

1 ounce cranberry juice

½ ounce triple sec

½ ounce lime juice

1)      Combine the ingredients with ice in a shaker.

2)      Shake well and strain into a chilled cocktail glass

tequila mockingbird2

Sugar, for cocktail rim

1 ½ ounces vodka

1 ounce sour apple schnapps

½ ounce lime juice

½ teaspoon granulated sugar

1)      Rim a chilled cocktail glass in sugar and set aside.

2)      Shake the ingredients with ice and strain into the glass.

tequila mockingbird4

Theory One – She’s Perfectly Levelheaded

4 ounces orange juice

2 ounces vodka

Theory Two – She’s Nuts

4 ounces sparkling orange soda (like Orangina)

2 ounces vanilla vodka

1)      For either variation, pour the ingredients in a highball glass.

Here are my favorite Gulps for Guys:

1 ounce melon liquor

1 ounce tequila

1 (12-ounce) can club soda

1)      Pour the liquor and tequila over ice in a highball glass.

2)      Fill to the top with the club soda.

tequila mockingbird3

5 fresh blueberries, washed

3 small, fresh strawberries, washed

8 sprigs fresh mint, washed

½ ounce lemon juice

1 ounce agave nectar

1 ½ ounces light rum

1 (12-ounce) can club soda

1)      Muddle the berries, mint, juice, and nectar in a Collins glass.

2)      Add 2 handfuls ice and the rum, give a good stir, and top off with the club soda.

tequila mockingbird5

2 ounces whiskey (like Seagram’s)

1 (12-ounce) can lemon-lime soda

Kumquat, for garnish

1)      Combine the whiskey and lemon-lime soda over ice in a highball glass.

2)      Bait ‘n’ float your kumquat.

3)      Don’t sip and sail.

#SCBDRecipe: .@Veev & Lemonade cocktail

veev 1

I’ll admit, I am a sucker for a good, handcrafted cocktail. I have so much respect for all the mixologist out there. Before the new year, I was sent this awesome acai spirit, VeeV. I love that it’s a sustainable and relatively healthy spirit. They also donate 1% of their sales to rainforest preservation and environmental causes.

veev 2

My favorite way to drink it is simple, with homemade lemonade and it is so delicious. Jason also got me a juicer for Christmas so now I can make it anytime and its so easy and fun. Here’s the recipe:

Homemade Lemonade & VeeV

  • 2 lemons, juiced or squeezed
  • 1-2 cups of water
  • Sugar, sweeten to your liking
  • 1 shot VeeV

Mix homemade lemonade with VeeV  and enjoy!

#SCBDFavorite: Happy National Champagne Day!

scbdfavoriteWant to know how to pick a great, tasty (but still pocket-book-friendly) bottle of bubbly – and avoid the nasty champagne hangover?? And, what are the differences between Brut, Extra Brut, Dry and Sec? We’re here to help answer your questions!
  • Extra Brut – a bone-dry style, made with extremely low levels of sugar. (.6% sugar)
  • Brut – dry to the taste, referred to as dry in style, with very low levels of sugar left in the bottle. (1.5% sugar)
  • Extra Dry – usually slightly sweeter than Brut. It would seem that this style would taste drier than Brut but that is typically not the case. (1.2-2% sugar)
  • Sec – French for “dry or lean.” The sec styles often highlight a slightly sweet taste. (1.7-3.5% sugar)
  • Demi-sec – a little sweeter yet. “Half-dry” or semi-sweet in taste. (3.3-5% sugar)
  • Doux – meaning “sweet” in French, this champagne is the sweetest. A dessert champagne. (over 5% sugar)

The most common style today is Brut.

Also, check out this fantastic video from Blue Ribbon Hunter that includes tips on how to pick the perfect bottle of champagne for any occasion and budget. I was especially excited to find this video because there is a mini how-to, toward the end, for a party trick I have been dying to master!
