#SCBDReview: .@SpuntinoWineBar with Wine Boy

Spuntino Wine Tapas Logo

Wine Boy and I were craving small plates and wine after a long day of working together, so we headed to Clifton, New Jersey. Right by the AMC Theater is an Italian Wine Bar and Tapas restaurant called Spuntino, known for its fabulous selection of Italian wines and small plates. The atmosphere was welcoming and I loved the decoration of wine racks surrounding the entire restaurant. The restaurant was divided into two main parts: the bar area and the rest of the restaurant with tables and booths.

Wine Boy and I had the nicest waitress: her name was Allison, so I highly recommend grabbing a table that is served by Allison. That night, Wine Boy and I shared truffle French fries made with truffle oil, Parmigiano Reggiano, and Italian herbs. After that, we shared spaghetti alla carbonara with bacon, peas, Pecorina Romano, and egg yolk. Finally, we had speck, which is smoked prosciutto, from the Aldo Adige region in Italy, served on grilled crostini.

Spuntino Food

He simply had a soda since he offered to be my designated driver, so I treated myself to a quartino of Moscato. The Moscato was a 2011 fruity, medium bodied white from Trentino, specifically Mezzocorona which is a commune in this northern Italian region. I’m absolutely in love with the wine list at Spuntino. All of the wines are Italian wines. Suffice to say I fell in love with the moscato. It was not super sweet, which I find to be a great thing if it’s only sweet enough. Instead, the moscato was fruity, and I could smell pears, apples, and other light fruits.

Spuntino Wine Bar & Italian Tapas also takes OpenTable reservation. I highly recommend going to Spuntino either on a date or with a group of friends and/or family so you can all share these small plates. You can also buy the wines by the bottle. There are over 150 Italian wines to try from nearly all of Italy’s 20 wine regions. Saluti, cin cin, e buon appetito!

#SCBDReview: The Amen Way to a Mental & Physical strong way of Life- Amenzone Fitness

A professional Fitness trainer, founder of Amenzone Fitness and foundation, motivational speaker, and soon-to-be published writer, Amen Iseghohi, launched a series of fitness DVD’s called ‘Amenzone Rebel’ and ‘Amenzone Rebel Xtreme’.I am happy to have the opportunity to try some of these workouts out! Amenzone was created as a foundation and fitness program. Amen’s motivation and determination came from when he was younger; he remembered visiting his Grandmother at the age of 8 in West Africa. While there he learned and was introduced to the simplicity of movement, through workouts, dance, and even normal movements.  (http://www.amenzone.com/) He then took these movements and created his Amenzone Movement. Now he put it together for people to do at home by creating this movement into a fitness program, now DVD program, and a foundation to help fight against childhood obesity and self-esteem issues. This organization is known as Amenzone PE Foundation.  This is a non-profit organization and proceeds from the sales goes towards this great foundation.

The best part of all of these fitness programs within Amenzone is that the programs don’t focus just on your body, but also is put together to include the entire body. It works with inspirational and self-improvement. “Amenzone Rebel fitness program is not just about achieving physical fitness, but more about achieving both physical and mental wellness. “ (amenzone.com)

This workout on the DVD is for anyone at any level.  It goes through a full body workout, mixed with high intensity, and motivational and creative ways to interact and learn. You feel an improvement right away, at least I did. I felt more motivation to push myself harder and not to be a bystander. He quotes throughout the video by saying ‘You are either in or out, this is not a Spectator Sport”. And this simple quote seams very obvious, but when he says it the words help to have you push yourself harder. Put your whole self in the workout, commit 110%. Throughout the DVD, all the quotes are fabulous and really get your mind thinking in a way to help you work out. Strength is important in working out, but mental is also just as important. If you have no motivation or drive to work out, you are not going to get far on your journey. You feel yourself become stronger as you do the workout more and more, stronger mentally and physically. It is a new way to move and workout.

Amen goes by the quote of “Training for Life,” which means you are preparing yourself for life, not just a work out and to look good, but internal. Giving you a drive and reason to be healthy and change your lifestyle.

The first DVD is Amenzone Rebel; it is a 40 minute beginner workout. This uses no weights, just yourself and own body weight. The second DVD, Amenzone Rebel Xtreme is a more high intense workout that helps challenge your to the next level.

Both can be combined with Amenzone’s Tire, or any weight or object you have available to you that is safe to use. The prices of the DVD’s are also super affordable! They go for $9.95 each and can be purchased online at www.amenzonedvd.com.

Now it is my turn to try it out, I will be doing the Amenzone Rebel workout from DVD one first then the Amenzone Rebel Xtreme.  My first reaction when the work out was that it is a hard workout! I loved it. Throughout the video they offer an easier option or an option without the Rebel workout Tire. I did not have the tire, so I used a Bosu ball instead. I incorporated lifting and doing pushups and various workouts with the Bosu Ball. Some things I still could not do, so I followed the people without it on the DVD. He is great with motivating you to push yourself and says some great quotes throughout the video. My favorite quote is “This is not a spectator Sport”. I loved this one because it is true, don’t just stand back and watch, keep moving and motivate yourself to not stop until the end of the workout. He has you always moving, which is fabulous!

amenzone dvd 1 workout

During this DVD, as I said I used the Bosu Ball to do some workouts. I have some pictures of myself in a few poses with how I used the Bosu during the DVD below.

This workout is fabulous. I loved doing this workout, and as the workouts went on I could push myself harder during each move. I loved it and do want to share my joy with how much strength I am gaining by doing it. The first session I did have to really push myself, but now I know what to expect, which I love because I can now push myself even harder during certain spots. I highly recommend this DVD, and the second one!

The second DVD, Amenzone Rebel Xtreme, is harder than the first one. It adds in more cardio and harder moves. More great quotes throughout this DVD and new moves that come together to be a harder and effective workout routine. I equally love both DVD’s and the good thing about it if I do another workout and a DVD I stick to the first one, if I want a harder workout not combined with another workout, I stick to DVD 2. Either way, you are going to get a really good workout and gain strength mentally and physically while doing so.

Amenzone Rebel Xtreme’s workouts are harder, but I was still able to incorporate the Bosu ball as part of the workout.

Here is a list of the workouts and what I used the Bosu with.

amenzone dvd 2 workout

As part of the DVD, there is an option to take a Grit test. It is a short test that acts as a guideline of how much muscle or strength and endurance you gain. They recommend you take this test every four weeks or so.  This is an awesome way to keep track of your strength throughout the process or just in general of your workouts. A scale does not always measure if you lost weight or gained muscle, most scales don’t differentiate between the two. So this allows you to actually feel and see the difference by completing this test every four weeks. The test is as follows:

1 minute Push-ups

1 minute Squat Jumps

1 minute Core Sit-Ups

The goal is to see how many of each you can do in the one minute allotted time. Then you add up the reps of all three. That total is your Grit Number. As an example, I did 20 pushups, 50 Squats, and 20 Core sit ups. My Grit number is 90. This was the first day I did the workout and test.

As a final note I would like to quote Amenzone Fitness “Movement is Life. Mind and Body are one.”

These are pictures of me using the bosu ball instead of the tire with some of the workout. Enjoy and be safe.

#SCBDReview: Show Goes On at Circo

photo 3

There’s a circus in Manhattan and involves an adorable Venetian man who told The Dentist that he better be nice to me OR ELSE, followed by a sly wink and a coy smile. This isn’t a bar joke. This is true life at Circo in midtown Manhattan. I grew up eating at Circo, an Italian midtown staple located on 55th Street between 6th and 7th Avenue, right across from the famous New York City Center. I grew up knowing the friendly Venetian man named Bruno. Knowing just how wonderfully cheeky Bruno is, I wanted to go there as a last resort with The Dentist.

photo 2

I wanted to try something new. I wanted to broaden my horizons. When The Dentist told me he wanted something Italian, I wanted to be adventurous and step outside of my childhood comfort zone of Circo. I walked to 56th Street in order to try Basso56. I knew full well that I was walking in at primetime Manhattan dinner hours on a Friday night without reservations. Alas, Basso56 would not have a free table for another hour and a half. I tried Patsy’s right next door since they proudly display photos of famous celebrities who ate there. I wanted to join in on that club, but they, too, were full for another hour and a half.

photo 4

I sighed, knowing full well that Circo for Friday night Italian food it was. Bruno welcomed The Dentist and I with open arms, without a reservation. We had a lovely booth-style table and a kind lady checked in my trench coat for me. Circo is like your friendly neighborhood Italian restaurant, if your kind of neighborhood is midtown Manhattan. The food is always fresh, delicious, and made with Venetian love. It’s been consistently scrumptious for the past seven years that I’ve been going there.

photo 1

The Dentist had a great time at Circo. I asked him for his objective opinion of the restaurant, considering I grew up there eating Ravioli Di Mamma Egi and homemade gelati e sorbetti because they make their own gelato and sorbet ice cream over there. They even have a gelato cart outside of the restaurant. The Dentist was extremely entertained by the rotating figurines on top the restaurant since the theme of Circo is the circus. The bread basket alone was enough to keep him coming back for more. Perhaps, it was fate that the other two Italian restaurants I wanted to try that evening were fully booked. At least I knew that even with no reservations, The Dentist and I fit in perfectly with the classy neighborhood company at Circo.

I leave you with this food for thought quote by my boy, Drake:

“I’d much rather sit here in silence
I send all my money to banks in the islands and eat with Italians, I do”

Cheers! Say “ciao” to Bruno for me.

#SCBDTravels: Happy Sails to You! -Mystic, CT Getaway

scbdtravelsMy most recent getaway was a girls weekend to Mystic, CT. After lobbying for location ideas we decided on this waterside town because none of us had ever vacationed there. We wanted the coastal feel and it was a short hike (or so we thought…beware it took much longer than expected with summer traffic-but it was worth it) from Jersey.
I take the reins when it came to activity planning; it’s a task I both enjoy and take seriously if handed over to me. I went into the trip planning with only one clear directive from the group. One of my friends had created a “Before 30 Bucket List” and we were all chipping in to help her reach her goal. Her birthday was in September and she had a few items left to check off; sailing was one of them. I grew up at the shore and had grandparents who lived on a lagoon with their very own sailboat in their backyard. Needless to say, I was shocked to hear someone hadn’t even set foot on a sailboat! Mystic was the perfect destination for a sailing adventure and I was determined to set up this expedition.

The Bucket Lister-Dana and Captain Darin

The Bucket Lister-Dana and Captain Darin

Typically, my main planning focus on any trip is always food related. What are the restaurants, experiences, events we need to hit up while in town? Any friends and family who know me and have heard my travel adventures, always know that even the trip story is primarily focused on food. (“Oh the sightseeing was great but, the Osso Bucco at the Purple Pig was the best pork I’ve ever had and don’t get me started on Chicago style pizza.”….sentiments from a recent trip to Chicago sounded a lot like this).
For the first time in a while, I have to say that the highlight of my trip was not surrounding a food related experience and for that reason exactly, I felt compelled to share.
It goes back to that sailing experience I was working on planning. After seeding through search results for basic harbor tours and family-oriented sail outings, I finally came across what I hoped to be our perfect match. And it ended up being just that!

Group shot of us enjoying our sail

Group shot of us enjoying our sail

I contacted our captain, Darin, and set us up for a 2 hour Sunset Cruise around the Harbor. The 4 of us would have a boat to ourselves and it was BYOB for all food and beverages we wanted to bring along (wine and cheese party here we come!).  I will admit I was a bit skeptical booking our excursion because the website was a bit novice and the deposit had to be mailed by check (praying I didn’t just get taken by an online scam). But, the experience made up for what the website lacked.

Me-trying my best to fill in as Captain!

Me-trying my best to fill in as Captain!

Our Sunset cruise had to be moved when the day came due to rain so, we rescheduled to the next morning for the Sunrise tour. When we arrived, Captain Darin helped us get settled in and we were off. He graciously provided us with a stereo that we could plug our iPhones into to set the musical tone. (Bob Marley Pandora station did the trick)  Since we did not want cheese and crackers and wine, as I mentioned earlier, to go bad we had a very European style breakfast. (And why not we were on vacation!)  We took turns steering the boat, taking in the view, sun bathing, and gabbing away. Captain Darin was great at answering questions about the area, although it was not intended to be a sightseeing cruise. He also provided us with some great local recommendations for activities to do and food spots to try out during our stay. Although Captain Darin was with us the entire time, the outing also felt very private and we got ample “Girl Time” in.

Our 2 hours were up too quick but, we were informed that the next time we visit he welcomes 6 hour tours with stops for swimming, lunch, etc., as well. As I said before, I seldom get so enthusiastic about a non-food related activity (although we did have a great little spread). I would encourage those traveling up that way to look into Captain Darin and one of his “tours.” He sails on into October and can fit small groups for that intimate setting and to get away from the crowds. Also, on a side note for all those travelling on a budget, this trip will not break your bank! It is truly only a couple bucks more than those big group harbour tours they offer around town.

Until next time-Happy Sails!
