#SCBDReview: In Heaven at Veggie Heaven in Denville, NJ

Picture 1 (1)

I decided to try this restaurant I pass by all the time in Denville, NJ. It is called Veggie heaven. It is a 100% natural vegetarian cuisine restaurant. They pride themselves to being super healthy and vegetarian. They cook with pure olive oil and other healthy oils that all have positive nutritional value. They are an Asian inspired place as well. They create their dishes with vegetables and vegetable derivatives. They even quote on their menu that “our ‘meat’, ‘poultry’, and ‘seafood’ are made from ingenious blends of bean curd, taro root, wheat gluten, mushrooms, yams, and other vegetables.”

They are located right on the main street in the center of Denville. They start out by giving you water and a dish of a cabbage mix. It was sweet and so tasty. A great start to the meal.

Picture 2 (1)

For my meal I decided to go with a lunch special. It costs $6.95 and included a choice of soup or spring roll. The main dish had a choice of white or brown rice. I decided to start with the spring roll. It came with sweet and sour sauce to dip it in. The taste was so fresh. It was delicious and honestly was the best spring roll I have ever had. The crust was flakey but not super oily.

Picture 3 (1)

For the main dish I ordered the sweet and sour ‘chicken’ with brown rice.

Picture 4 (1)

This was outstanding. I asked if it was fried, and she said it is lightly but can be cooked without it being friend, so I took that option. Everything was delicious. The rice was soft and good, it came with broccoli and mushrooms. These were soft and fresh. The sauce I got medium spice, it was the right amount of kick to enjoy. The ‘chicken’ was delicious. It was better than chicken, it was full of flavor and was a cool consistency. It was soft but not too soft. It had a consistency similar to tofu, but more hard. It was outstanding. I even had a little left over that I brought home. It was a good portion for lunch!

I also ordered the house tea. They do have other flavors but I was unaware of this when I ordered. It was similar to Chinese tea but not as strong. It was a delicious combination to accompany my meal. This was also no additional fee for the tea.

Picture 5 (1)

The meal finished with the bill and a fortune cookie. I love finishing my tea with a fortune cookie; the combination of the two is delightful. My fortune cookie read ‘solid gains are possible today, but with a headache.’ I can relate to this. It has been a long day, but one where I accomplished a lot of difficult things. I love fortunes.

Finally my bill was under $10, it cost $7.44 with tax. Then I left a tip on top of that. It was a great deal for some amazing food. Even the average meat lover would love this place. I love a good steak, chicken, or pork dinner, but this place is outstanding no matter what type of eater you are.

I rate this place an A plus. Service was outstanding and alert, really friendly too. The food is beyond outstanding and the atmosphere is so relaxing and pleasant, it is like a getaway. Please try this place, a must go in Denville.

#SCBDReview: Slap It Silly at Reservoir!

scbdreview

photo 1

Friday afternoon I walked into Reservoir Bar feeling out of place in my high heels and LBD post-work. In the back of the bar by the kitchen sat my friend The Writer on the velvet couch. The back was dimly lit, and he looked quite mysterious reading a book and drinking a beer under the mood lighting. There were posters all throughout Reservoir advertising different brands of beer. My favorite had to be the Porkslap Pale Ale poster that said: Slap it Silly!

photo 3

The Writer was drinking a LandShark Lager; it tasted warm and disgusting. He switched to Stella Artois which was much better. I ended up drinking a few bottles of Dogfish Head which is a craft brewed ale from Delaware. I highly recommend their 60 Minute IPA which is brewed year round. It’s called the 60 Minute IPA since it’s continuously hopped with more than 60 hop additions over 60-minutes.

photo 2

I really enjoyed the overall vibe of Reservoir Bar since it’s located in Greenwich Village. Since it’s an American sports bar, I anticipated sweaty men shouting about grown-up, manly things like sports, cars, and chest hair, but it ended up being mostly local college kids. This made sense to me considering it’s located on University Place between 10th and 11th which is right by NYU and the New School. Reservoir’s prices are extremely cheap for Manhattan since you can get 20 buffalo wings for $7.95. I wouldn’t imagine staying at Reservoir the whole evening of a night out in Manhattan, but it’s a great stop in between bar hopping or before dinner. Go on and Slap it Silly at a college sports bar!

#SCBDReview: Shore Good Pancake House is surely better than good

scbdreview

Shore Good Pancake House is surely not an eatery to be missed. The food is not only good and plentiful, but the menu is creative as well, and the service…way beyond what goes for service at most breakfast places. While a little off the ‘shore’, it is still close enough to enjoy while staying at the beach or on your way TO the beach. We stopped there one weekend morning. Aren’t weekends so much better for a leisurely meal?

Jersey Omelet

Jersey Omelet

As we walked in we were greeted by the host who already knew what tables were available and we were seated promptly. We had been here before and had decided to try something a little more adventurous than the last time. I just love the names of the omelet’s, burgers and sandwiches. They are fun and local. Our coffee was hot and fresh and refilled often. Didn’t I say service was above par? I also noticed throughout our meal that the host made sure the bus boys were cleaning quickly upon the departure of a table as well as cleaning up the floor that seems to get messier(to me) during breakfast service than other services.

PB & J pancakes

PB & J pancakes

I decided on the Jersey omelet, bacon and American cheese. My companion had the peanut butter and jelly pancakes. We enjoyed our coffees while discussing how we thought the pb&j pancakes would be presented. My omelet, while not too exotic came with an abundance of fresh home cooked potatoes and toast and jelly. His pancakes turned out to be 3 huge pancakes rolled with peanut butter chips in and on the pancakes topped with jelly. According to my companion, this was the perfect combo, with the peanut butter chips melting in and on the pancakes. While a large and filling breakfast for an adult, this could surely be breakfast for 2 children. Coffees were refilled as needed and we were full and ready for whatever was ahead in our weekend!

#SCBDExclusive: Potbelly to Open in Paramus this Tuesday!

scbdexclusive

If you’ve been an avid SCBD reader from the beginning you know one of my favorite places to grab lunch while I interned at The Rachael Ray Show was Potbelly Sandwich Shop. It was an easy walk from the former studio in Midtown East, affordable, and delicious and I’m not normally a big sandwich person. Check out my original post featuring Potbelly, here.

potbelly

I loved eating Potbelly so much that I wanted them to open up in New Jersey. Now over a year later, they are opening their second New Jersey location (the first is in Jersey City) at Bergen Town Center in Paramus, NJ. The Potbelly official grand opening is this Tuesday, February 19th at 11am.

pptbelly paramus tweet

In honor of the opening they are having an Oven Warming Party (which I found out via Twitter) tomorrow from 11am-1:30pm. The first 260 people to sign up (admits you and one guest) can enjoy a Potbelly Originals sandwich, a bag of chips, and a fountain drink, all for a $5 cash donation per person that will be going to Family to Family to raise funds for their projects.  Be sure to RSVP, here, tonight! I’m planning on attending, so maybe I’ll see you there?!

If you can’t make it out tomorrow, make sure you stop by for their official grand opening Tuesday or anytime the rest of the week.  I highly recommend the Roast Beef sandwich which is my personal favorite, I’ve even ordered it “Bigs” (30% more meat) because it’s that delicious!

Here’s to a successful grand opening and giving Potbelly a warm welcome to Bergen County!

Happy Eating! :D

#New #SCBD Jersey Bites Post-Enjoy A Date Night at Chakra in Paramus

Enjoy A Date Night at Chakra in Paramus (via Jersey Bites)

Before the holidays, I was invited to go to a media dinner at Chakra, a restaurant and lounge located centrally off Route 4, in Paramus. Since Chakra has such a romantic atmosphere, I felt it was only right to bring along my boyfriend, Jason. Chakra, certainly lives up to its romantic reputation with…

Authentic Mexican Food & Cocktails at Chapala Grill– #SCBDApproved!

So normally I try to go to a restaurant once or twice if I can before I write about it but I went to Chapala Grill in Bergenfield, NJ this past Saturday night with my roommate Leah for a girls night out and had to tell you all about it!

531565_10151242482915588_199681935_n

When we first decided to go we figured we’d just order drinks and appetizers since the cocktails they had and beer were an unbeatable price. Leah got a beer ($3.50)  and I got a Peach Margarita on the rocks ($5.50) to start and they brought us out some tortilla chips and salsa. The salsa was perfect not too thick and had a little kick in every bite. Next, we decided to order some of their specialties since they were amazing priced. Leah got the Burrito Chapala ($13.95) that is a burrito with crab meat, spinach, and more. I decided to get the Tacos Mexicanos ($11.75) with steak, pico de gallo, and cilantro. We both devoured our meals and enjoyed every bite. I even put some salsa on my tacos it was so good and we took our leftover rice & beans to go.

I’ve learned the secret to a great Mexican restaurant is that it has:

  • Strong, delicious Margaritas
  • Food Portioned perfectly
  • Affordable
  • Authentic

Chapala Grill was all that & more! We both decided to we had to bring our boyfriend, friends, and family here for dinner. They also have an awesome happy hour we were interested in attending sometime.

Chapala Grill is located at 52 South Washington Ave  Bergenfield, NJ 07621

Happy Eating…Cheers! :D

Turkey-Bacon Avocado Sandwich

When I began working full time after I graduated from college, I loved going to Whole Foods for lunch.  It became a very guilty and delicious habit.  The funny thing was that the options I chose for my daily lunch were things I could easily make from home.  My wallet told me this was a good idea and I am so glad I listened.  ;-)

This sandwich is one of my favorites.  As much as I love the combo of bacon and avocado, I don’t eat pork.  So like most of my restaurant favorites, I recreated the standard Club Sandwich on my own terms.  This one fills me up, is low on processed ingredients, and lends itself to easy modifications.  Oh and it takes less than 10 minutes to throw together.  What more could you ask for?

photo 1

Turkey Bacon Avocado Sandwich

Ingredients:

  • 2 slices Oasis Low-Carb Flaxseed bread (use your favorite bread or whatever you have on hand)
  • 2 slices lean turkey bacon
  • 1/2 cup of shredded turkey breast
  • 3 slices tomato
  • 1/4 avocado
  • Handful of spinach

Instructions:

  1. On one slice of bread, layer the turkey and turkey bacon over the tomatoes and spinach.
  2. Smear the avocado on the other slice of bread.  If you want to add mayo, go for it.  But trust me when I say that all of these flavors together are perfect without it too.
  3. Put the halves together and wait for coworker envy.

What is your favorite thing to bring for lunch?

#DealAlert There Ain’t No Burger Like A Mark Burger…

If you love burgers and looking for a cheap meal in the city then Mark Burger, (rightfully located at 33 St. Marks Place) is the place for you. They serve huge shakes that pair perfectly with their sliders (you get 1 slider with every order). You also don’t want to pass up on their chili cheese fries.

IMG_2725IMG_2729IMG_2730IMG_2725

Mark Burger is a great deal because their sliders start at $2.50 and are pretty big, topped with American Cheese and Grilled Onions. They also have an interesting take on a bacon burger because instead of it having it on top of the burger they put crumbled bacon into their meat mix which is a rarity in the city.

IMG_2721IMG_2722IMG_2724IMG_2723

Trying one of their shakes is a must, they are huge but delicious. I had the black and white shake but they are known for their Guinness shake.

IMG_2717

IMG_2720IMG_2719IMG_2718

They have a lunch special 2 sliders, fries & a soda for $8 and happy hour Monday-Friday from 3-7pm.

Next time you’re in the Lower East Side and are looking for a quick, hearty bite that won’t break your budget go to Mark Burger…your stomach and wallet will thank you!

Happy Eating! :D

#SCBD Quick And Easy Skin-On Mashed Potatoes

Mashed Potatoes

Nothing screams comfort food like homemade skin-on mashed potatoes! About a week or so ago due to the massive amount of potatoes I had (and still have in my kitchen) I decided to give it a whirl! Not only are these mashed potatoes delicious but they are easy & budget friendly!

Ingredients:

  • 4-5 Russet Potatoes
  • 4 tablespoons of butter
  • 1/2 cup of milk or heavy cream
  • salt (as desired)

Instructions:

  • Wash potatoes then put them into a large pot and let boil for about 20 minutes (you should be able to stick a fork in them no problem).
  • Strain potatoes so that there is no water in the pot then add butter and milk or heavy cream.
  • Mash potatoes until they are a smooth consistency
  • Serve with your favorite dish and enjoy!

If you are looking for a healthy alternative I highly recommend you use milk rather than heavy cream. I only had milk at the time but I bought heavy cream last week so I have it for when I make them again since they tasted so great! I am huge mashed potato fan and was surprised how easy they were to make!

Happy Cooking! :D
