Wine & Dine at George & Martha’s

If you don’t know Morristown, New Jersey I’ll give you quick bit of history about it now. George Washington’s Headquarters were located in Morristown during the Revolutionary War during the winter of 1779-1780. Now you’re probably wondering why I am telling you this and what’s the point? Well, here’s why– it’s because the restaurant I am reviewing is rightfully called George & Martha’s for that reason. It’s a hip American restaurant with a twist of history in the heart of good ol Morristown.

George & Martha’s (67 Morris Street, Morristown, NJ 07960)

Customer Service: 5- I went with my school’s Young Alumni Association that I am on the board of and our waiter was on top of everything and got all our orders right. That was until I wanted my desert wrapped and we had already paid but other than that– no complaints.

Atmosphere/Cleanliness: 4.5- Since it’s located in the heart of Morristown, we had a view of Cluck-U and a shopping plaza across the street and of course the sound of the ambulance wasn’t great either but that’s what you get in a city and since the restaurant is small you’ll hear anything. The decor inside was impressive and they can hold a crowd in the restaurant which made up for the noise and view outside.

Food/Drink Quality: 5- The food was great and you could tell it was made fresh. I got the Flat Iron Steak that came with fresh steamed veggies and mashed potatoes. It was cooked to order and I even had leftovers which tasted great the next day. Everyone in my group was satisfied with what they got. I even got dessert which was good enough to bring back. I got their chocolate mousse cake which was great. We all enjoyed the cocktails we got and they were served in an orderly fashion.

Price: $$ – Yes the food is a bit pricey but it’s well worth it. It also doesn’t have to be incredibly pricey depending on what you get. I’m sure if you got appetizers and drinks it wouldn’t put a whole in your pocket. But if it’s a great place to go on a date or just enjoy a dinner with friends or family after a long week or to celebrate. It’s also a very classy location to hold events for networking, dinners, and more!

Final Score: 14.5/15- Did I mention how great my leftovers were the next day? Yes, they were just as good as they were the night before. I highly recommend their steak’s because they are made to order and cooked to your liking. The sides were great and they do a great job with presentation. It’s a classic American grille so you can’t go wrong. The drinks are as amazing as the food is. I’m pretty sure some people at FDU would gladly take a night off from the cafe so I’d love to see some more FDU presence there!

So with that said, go enjoy a meal with someone you love or some great friends at George & Martha’s– it’s been Small Chick Approved. :)

The North Jersey #BurgerBattle!

Hey everyone! Hope you all had a great weekend filled with great food and of course relaxation! You know how I like to bring you the best so I am now announcing a burger battle. Since I am currently reviewing in North Jersey I found out about two great burger places up here. So let the #BurgerBattle begin…

Elevation Burger (367 Bloomfield Ave, Montclair, NJ 07042)

Elevation Burger is the type of burger joint where you place your order then when its ready they call your name and you can grab it or they will bring it out to you if they know where you are sitting. They focus on having organic products and serve 100% Certified Angus Beef,  and have a variety of Veggie Burgers as well for anyone who does not want to eat meat.

Customer Service: 5 – The entire time I ate my meal they were constantly seeing if I needed anything and how the meal was. The great customer service made the meal that much more enjoyable.

Atmosphere/Cleanliness: 4.5- It was set up like any burger place. There were plenty of seats in front and more in back. It was clean and maintained well.

Food/Drink Quality: 4.5- I got the, “Half the Guilt” burger which was a regular patty and a veggie patty. There are actually two veggie patties you can choose from either veggie burger 1 which has a fire roasted taste (I chose that) or veggie burger 2 which was a more vegan alternative. I loved the taste of everything and you definitely get a hefty amount of fries but I just found the burgers to be a bit small but they had a great taste!

Price: $ – My total was about $9 and I got a burger, soft drink, and fries. They also had shakes which are about $3 dollars if you wanted to get one, which I plan on doing next time. I found it to be reasonably priced for the area that’s in it too. It’s definitely affordable to anyone. There are two locations in NJ- Montclair (North Jersey) and Moorestown (South Jersey)

Final Score: 14/15- I really enjoyed my meal and would try a regular burger next time but I love the veggie alternative. The fries were definitely different then most burger places I’ve been too but I was definitely impressed.

The #BurgerBattle continued at…

Smashburger (187 Columbia Turnpike, Florham Park, NJ 07932)

Smashburger also focuses on using organic products and use 100% Certified Angus Beef. They ‘smash’ there burgers and use unique ‘secret’ spices in all their food so their food is unique to any other burger joint. Every burger is smashed daily and made to order. You order your food at the front counter then they give you a number to put on the table you want to sit at and they bring your food out to you once its ready.

Customer Service: 4.5 – The service was great and they helped me figure out what I wanted no problem. It just took a little longer than I would’ve liked which to get my shake, which set them back to a 4.5, but I was able to catch someone and got it right away. It was very busy place and they were always checking to make sure everyone was satisfied with their meal and I rarely heard a “No” from any customers near me. I was also impressed that I was able to speak to a manager who was welcome to any questions I had, etc.

Atmosphere/Cleanliness: 5- Smashburger definitely has an atmosphere of its own, but that’s what makes it so much more fun to go to. It was clean and there is usually a seat open depending on what time you go. Dinner time is usually pretty crowded and there are a lot of families who eat there due to its location.

Food/Drink Quality 5 – I got the BBQ Bacon Cheeseburger which was delicious and I actually ended up eating some of the leftovers for lunch. The burgers are big enough and fill you up. They also have great smash fries, I’ve had them before and love them. I admit I was a bit disappointed in the sweet potato fries because I didn’t think the spices blended as well as they do with regular fries. There “smash fries” are tossed in rosemary, olive oil, and garlic and taste great.  Their milkshakes are great, I got the Nutter Butter and it was one of the best milkshakes I’ve had. It was spun enough times and I could taste all the flavor.

Price: $ – My total was about $13.56 but that was with the milkshake, Minus the shake it would’ve been about $9 bucks. It can definitely be about a $20 meal if you share fries. It’s definitely affordable to anyone and they have various locations in Northern Jersey.

Final Score: 14.5/15 – The food was awesome when I ate it there and I loved my leftovers the next day. The portions are good, not too big and not too small. I recommend any of the burgers and the original smash fries and while you’re at it get a milkshake. You won’t be disappointed!

So now the question is who won the #BurgerBattle?

These places go into my Gourmet Burger Franchise category. Now that is announced, the winner I chose is Smashburger. Elevation was great but I wasn’t that impressed with the burgers, its a great place if you have vegetarian friends but Smashburger offers vegetarian alternatives as well. You definitely can’t beat the taste of Smashburger and its well worth the price.

So don’t just sit here, go find a Smashburger nearby and dig in and let me know if you agreed with me, I love feedback.

Also feel free to suggest any burger joints of any kind for me to go to for the #BurgerBattle! Feel free to leave them here or @smchickbigdeals on Twitter or on the Facebook page!

Happy Eating!

Small Chick Big Deals Rating Scale Update!

Hey Readers!! Hope you all had a great start to the week and looking forward to a great week ahead! I have updated my rating scale as of this weekend so I figured it’s the perfect time to fill you all in, I will be reviewing the places I go by a score of 1-5 (5 being the best, 1 being the worst) in the following categories:

  1. Customer Service
  2. Atmosphere/Cleanliness
  3. Food/Drink Quality
  4. Price

FYI This is the price scale:

  • $ – Cheap, affordable to anyone :) ($1-15)
  • $$- A tad bit more expensive but somewhat affordable ($15-45)
  • $$$ – Expensive, may need to save up to go here but its worth it! (45-100+)

Then as always I will give the final score out of 15 (since price doesn’t have a score) followed by if I would go back and what I recommend!

I should be updating later in the week, this weekend latest! I have many restaurant adventures ahead and I can’t wait to tell you all about it! As always feel free to leave me a comment or recommend a place to go if I haven’t mentioned it already but a lot are in my line-up!

Until next time- Happy Eating Foodies! :)

An Eating Adventure in Hell’s Kitchen…

After enjoying our delicious lunch in Midtown East we headed towards Hell’s Kitchen to attend a networking Happy Hour sponsored by Ed2010 where the Intern Queen was also having a book signing for her book, “All Work No Pay”. My other half and I met up with our friends and headed to the happy hour.  The happy hour was hosted at Southern Hospitality, which unfortunately was a bit over my budget so we had to find somewhere else to eat dinner. But that doesn’t mean I won’t go there, I plan on scheduling a time to go there and eat, especially during a happy hour when they have deals. But I’ll give you a quick rating still.

Customer Service: 3.5 — Since we were downstairs it was harder to get in touch with staff to eat but our drinks at the bar came quick and tasted fine. We each got a Miller Lite since it was a special.

Southern Hospitality 645 9th Ave., New York, NY 10063

Customer Service: 4– The customer service was good but slow since we were downstairs.

Cleanliness: 5– It was really clean and comfy.

Atmosphere: 5 — The atmosphere upstairs seemed spread out enough you could have a good meal and it was comfy where the event was held downstairs.

Food/Drink Quality: 4 — Since the drinks were nice & cold, they get a 4. But I have yet to try the food there, but I will post about it when I do!

Score: 18/20 — As I mentioned the food being so expensive was bit of a turn-off, but it is owned by Justin Timberlake so I’m not gonna hate. It smelled great and the beer was good, until next time Southern Hospitality.

———————— —————————- ———————– ————–

We decided to find somewhere a bit more budget friendly while we were in Hell’s Kitchen with our friends. At the event we were told to check out this empanada place, Empanada Mama (763 9th Ave # 1  New York, NY 10019-6313). They had empanadas ranging from 2.50 on and had a large arrangement of Latin dishes. Here’s my rating:

Customer Service: 3.5– It was great at first, but we weren’t asked how our food was while we ate. Also FYI they add a 18% service charge to your bill which was tad negative, its a Zagat rated restaurant, I’d hope people who go there would tip.

Cleanliness: 5 — It was very clean, wasn’t dusty. No complaints.

Atmosphere: 4– It was pretty small and you had just enough room to yourself when you sat down. It was crowded which was nice, but they should expand since they have a pretty good cliental.  The music was fun also.

Food/Drink Quality: 3.5– They highlight that they have different types of empanadas from “Reggaeton” to “Cheesesteak” which is nice & different. We got the guac which was amazing! I’d definitely get that again and maybe an entree next time. I’m half Colombian so I’m pretty picky about my empanadas. My other half whose Uruguayan wasn’t too impressed but he enjoyed the guac as well. Our friends really enjoyed it. I liked that they had Colombiana one of my favorite sodas to get there as well. Everything was fully cooked, but I’d try different empanadas next time.

Score:  16/20 — Would I go there again? Yes, but for happy hour they have 2 happy hours which is a plus. Next time I’d try one of there steak entrees since they smelt amazing, I’d also make reservations in advanced next time.

I love any Latin cuisine so if you know a place in NYC I should go to comment me here! And if your in Hell’s Kitchen go to Empanada Mama in the meantime!

Feliz Comiendo Readers :)

696 Deli never fails…

So for old times sake, I decided to take a stroll down Midtown East with my other half. We just came from a long commute from the Garden State to New York City and were ready for lunch. As we walked down East 44th, my other half mentioned he’d like to go to a real, good, hearty New York Deli. Before we could even step into another deli I insisted he follow me around the corner to 696 Deli and lets just say he was more than satisfied with his lunch!

696 Deli - 696 3rd Ave (3rd Ave. between 43rd St. & 44th St.)

I mentioned 696 in a review earlier highlighting my top 5 places in Midtown East, but after going there again yesterday I was reminded why its so good and figured I should go in a little more depth. If you did not read my previous blog, this is how the ratings go. I will give the places I go a rating of 1-5 on customer service, cleanliness,  atmosphere, how the food is (ie: quality & taste). The score as a whole will be judged out of 20 (since there are 4 categories that can get a rating of 1-5)! Last I will tell you if I thought it was good enough to go back. (This will be featured in my restaurant reviews as well- FYI). As always I’ll mention what I recommend, etc. Ready? Here we go!

Customer Service: 5 — I was reminded once again how customer friendly they are, they were attentive when they took our order and kind. It wasn’t too crowded either so we had no problems. They even brought our food to the table we sat at in back instead of calling us when they were ready. The cashier was kind as always and recognized me and their prices are very people friendly so they get a good crowd of people.

Cleanliness: 5– For a deli its pretty clean and very organized by food, snacks, drinks, and the kitchen is organized as well. Its so easy to order!

Atmosphere: 4.5 — The section to order is nice-sized but the tables to eat in back is tucked in and doesn’t have tons of room. When I interned it was very friendly for to-go orders which is what most people do. But eating in back was comfy enough and the people who sat next to us were regulars and friendly.

Food quality & Taste: 5 — As I mentioned in my other blog that 696 is mentioned in, there breakfast sandwiches are the best around, perfect sized and just delicious. But this time around we had lunch. My other half had the Mexican Philly Hero which a Mexican version of a Philly Cheese Steak and he loved it. It was a nice size and you could probably save half of it for another day if you were not incredibly hungry. My other half was very satisfied and glad I brought him there. As for me, I decided the Cuban Hero was my first lunch dish at 696. I liked it a lot and would take half with me home in the future. It definitely hit the spot  and I was glad to be back.

Score: 19.5/20 — Would I recommend it? Is that even a question? YES!!! If you are in Midtown East go to 696, it will fulfill your needs for breakfast, lunch, dinner, or even a late night snack! Try a hero, they are only $6.95 or less a pop and are portioned enough for two meals if you can’t eat it all in one shot. If you are there early and need breakfast grab a Bacon, Egg, and Cheese, I used to get it on a toasted bagel and it was delicious and won’t burn a whole in your pocket! What can beat that?!

Go give it a try & let me know if you agree, as always keep eating!

Why do you build me up BUTTERCUP?

After my post rewarding Crumbs the now Best Corporate Cupcake, I was contacted by a bakery I did not get a chance to go to over the course of my internship:

Buttercup Bake Shop

 973 2nd Avenue (Between 51st and 52nd Streets), New York, NY 10022

They are in the running for my best cupcake at a Home-style Bakery Award! So its a little bit easier to understand I will give the places I go a rating of 1-5 on customer service, cleanliness,  atmosphere, how the food is or in this case cupcake rating. The score as a whole will be judged out of 20 (since there are 4 categories that can get a rating of 1-5)! Last I will tell you if I thought it was good enough to go back. (This will be featured in my restaurant reviews as well- FYI). As always I’ll mention what I recommend, etc. Excited? I am!

Customer Service: 5– Excellent service, jumped up to help me right away. I heard them explaining dishes to customers. It definitely made the experience that much better.

Cleanliness: 5–  The store was pretty clean, easy to navigate.

Atmosphere: 4.5– It was a bit crammed, but it was your typical neighborhood bakery, I enjoyed the posters they had up, which made it fun. I also liked that they had a free mini cups of water available to their customers!

Cupcake Rating: 4– I got a Buttercup Golden with Vanilla Icing. I liked the cupcake itself, it was tasty so there batter recipe is definitely one of a kind. I’m very picky about my icing. The only thing I didn’t like was that there was a lot of icing. I thought the icing was good though, it wasn’t too sweet and had good flavor. It was also my favorite color purple which I enjoyed!

Score: 18.5/20 — With that said, I highly recommend you go to Buttercup! I was able to try their Banana Pudding which was great! I definitely would get a cup of pudding and coffee next time I’m there. I also want to try their cakes because a lot of customers who came in had a slice of cake. Not just any normal slice, but layer cakes! They have also have a bunch of other delectable choices. My boyfriend who came with me had the cheesecake swirl, which he thought was alright. The fact that they have so many varieties of deserts and cupcakes definitely made me want to come back!

With that said, if your in Midtown East, try Buttercup Bake Shop and let me know if you’d agree!!! I really enjoyed it!

I’ve even attached a picture of the menu so you can see your choices yourself:

Stay Sweet & Keep Eating Readers! :)

And the Cupcake Competition Continues!

If you read my previous blog, you know I love cupcakes and I’m trying to find the best one in NYC. When I wrote my previous entry I only chose between Crumbs (who won), Baked By Melissa, and Magnolia Bakery. So since those bakeries are chains and are not exclusive to NYC, they will still be in my competition. But here’s the deal, there will be different categories and levels. So Crumbs Bake Shop has one my Best Corporate Cupcake Award. I also plan on seeing if the service is good in NJ as well as NYC since there are Crumbs in NJ I can go to.

Now with no further a due, I would like to announce my newest category: Home-style Bakery Award. Which has now opened up to any bakery in NYC (and possibly NJ) that serves cupcakes, cakes, etc. If any bakery wants to step up to the challenge, please e-mail me at smallchickbigdeals@gmail.com. I’d love to come in and stop by!

Stay sweet readers! :)

My Favorite Cupcakes: NYC edition

If you know me, you know I have a sweet tooth: cupcakes, cookies, brownies, candy, you name it…I’m on it!

So after trying a variety of cupcakes in the city: Magnolia Bakery, Baked By Melissa, and of course the winner is…Crumbs!

Why I love Crumbs:

  • They are good sized and fill you up!
  • They have a nice variety
  • There cookies, danishes, etc aren’t bad
  • They have some killer coffee
  • You can eat them for breakfast
  • Excellent customer service!
The store I went to most was on Lexington because it was close to my internship, but they have tons of locations in NJ, NY, and DC! You can also order them online!
I recommend getting the chocolate coconut cupcake but they have plenty of variety! There a little pricey up to $4.50 for a cupcake but its worth it! I want a colossal for my birthday one year or graduation coming up!
Check out the website for more information: http://www.crumbs.com/
Now I’m craving some sweets :) Happy Eating cupcake lovers!!! :D

Dallas BBQ review

I figure I might as well have some reviews in here. Be aware these restaurants are in the NY/NJ metro area!

I had the pleasure of going to lunch with my Intern Queen family last week at Dallas BBQ in Times Square. We had fun and if you love frozen drinks this is your place because its there speciality! They have frozen margaritas and pina coladas that range from 6-9 bucks! They are really good and great with some lunch!

Pros:

- great drinks

- I had ribs and thought they were good.

- My baked potato was cooked well too.

- Lunch specials were $12 and under roughly

- They had a great onion roll appetizer!

Cons:

- My friends who got the chicken sandwich said it was dry

- Drinks were better than food

- No dessert on the menu?

- Service started off well but then got bad.

My conclusion: I liked it and would come back for drinks. The food was average and I liked it better than going to an Applebees in the city.

If you go let me know what you think and if you agree of disagree with me! Who knows where I’ll be next?!
